Just about everything in Quito<\/a>\u00a0comes with its own special challenges. \u00a0The\u00a0altitude and climate provide plenty of scope for things to go pear-shaped, \u00a0and mean that, from boiling an egg though to baking and gardening, nothing can be taken for granted.<\/p>\n

In Quito, there can be downpours for days, followed by weeks with no rain at all. \u00a0The sun is \u00a0powerful and evaporation is faster due to the lower pressure. \u00a0This all makes gardening\u00a0a challenge, especially for pots and planters, which can dry in a matter of hours.<\/p>\n

What is a SIP?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Wikipedia’s\u00a0page<\/a> is pretty poor, but there are plenty of resources to be found around the web\u00a0and a community of avid enthusiasts. \u00a0And this enthusiasm is not surprising, because SIPs are amazing! \u00a0I’ve enjoyed the process and the results so much I’ve become an evangelist (hence this entry).<\/p>\n

A SIP is any method of watering plants where the water is introduced from the bottom, allowing the water to soak upwards to the plant through\u00a0capillary action<\/a>\u00a0(Wikipedia).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
