{"id":501,"date":"2020-04-29T13:02:24","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T13:02:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ferguskane.com\/blogs\/?p=501"},"modified":"2020-04-29T13:13:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T13:13:05","slug":"mental-health-media-psychosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ferguskane.com\/blogs\/en\/mental-health-media-psychosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Videos about Psychosis: 2020 Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This blog <a href=\"http:\/\/ferguskane.com\/blogs\/the-blog-begins\/\">started<\/a> at the end of 2013, with me making public notes about representations of\u00a0mental health in online media.\u00a0 6 years or so later, there has been an explosion in the amount of high quality information available. \u00a0 Spurred on somewhat by the struggles of some of my clients during the covid-19 pandemic, I&#8217;m doing some more research on what&#8217;s out there. \u00a0 I&#8217;m updating the blog again with what I come across. \u00a0I&#8217;ll start with four videos about psychosis, two new to me, and two classics.<\/p>\n<h2>Being Jesus<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cB3L8pbm2F8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A brilliant punky, sweary, funny short film by John Oewinne about an experience of grandiose psychosis. \u00a0Opening warning from the film: comes with flashing imagery, blasphemy, irreverence, humour, music and other misdoings. \u00a0 \u00a0 The video talks about a common grandiose religious delusion. \u00a0The protagonist (it&#8217;s not clear if the person in the video is an actor or not) thought that he was Jesus, and also felt that he was able to talk to his recently deceased father. \u00a0He\u00a0talks us through the chronology of his delusion, from beginning to think he was Jesus, to being sure, to getting into conflict with his family about his beliefs, being hospitalised, being released\u00a0from hospital and then experiencing a\u00a0depressive fall that came after realising he was not Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>John Oewinne is involved in a number of interesting mental health projects and\u00a0I&#8217;ll be checking out his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coffeeandpsychosis.com\">Coffee and Psychosis<\/a> podcast ASAP.<\/p>\n<h2>Compassion for Voices.<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve posted this one before, but it continues to be incredibly well received by the people I and others\u00a0work with.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VRqI4lxuXAw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Being compassionate towards one&#8217;s voices, especially when the experience of voices can be\u00a0deeply unpleasant, can see counter\u00a0intuitive and even insulting. \u00a0However, from what many of my clients have told me, learning to be compassionate towards one&#8217;s auditory hallucinations \/ voices, can be\u00a0much easier than fighting\u00a0against them or studiously ignoring them, both of which can be\u00a0exhausting. \u00a0Compassion for voices can also fit\u00a0together with being more compassionate with oneself and with other people.<\/p>\n<p>For those that consider their voices to be a part of them, it can make sense to be compassionate to their\u00a0voices, as in the end, being angry at the voices means being angry at oneself &#8211; a stance that rarely\u00a0takes one to a better place. \u00a0At a deeper level, many have come to the conclusion that their voices also carry another message, about their own unprocessed emotions &#8211; whether that be able difficult childhood experiences or more recent difficult experiences such as bereavement or workplace bullying. \u00a0There is no one explanation-fits-all solution or explanation, but this one certainly resonates with many people.<\/p>\n<p>Compassion is often seen as a sign of weakness (a view that is often propagated by the society around us), but instead we can\u00a0see it as a sign of strength. \u00a0Likewise, for some, the idea of being compassionate can be scary, as they feel it might put them at risk. \u00a0However, a true, mindful compassion can help\u00a0put us in a strong, wise position, where we are able to\u00a0take control back over our lives.<\/p>\n<h2>The Voices in My Head<\/h2>\n<p>Compassion for Voices links really nicely with another classic talk, this one by Eleanor Longden talking for TED.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/syjEN3peCJw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nEleanor talks eloquently and with humour about how stigma, a poor response from health services and fear of her voice hearing experiences led to\u00a0\u00a0a huge worsening of her experiences while making sense of them and developing compassion led to recovery\u00a0and reclaiming her life. \u00a0Now a successful academic and campaigner, she promotes solitary among voice hearers and is a strong proponent of voice hearer groups such as\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearing-voices.org\">Hearing Voices Network<\/a>. and the International Hearing Voices Network,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.intervoiceonline.org\/2195\/voices\/personal-experience\/eleanor-longden.html\">Intervoice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You might recognise Dr Longden&#8217;s\u00a0own voice as she\u00a0also narrated the Compassion for Voices video.<\/p>\n<h2>People Call Me Crazy &#8211;
