{"id":70,"date":"2013-11-12T20:30:24","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T20:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ferguskane.com\/blogs\/?p=70"},"modified":"2014-03-04T18:33:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T18:33:00","slug":"youtube-bipolar-video-brief-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ferguskane.com\/blogs\/en\/youtube-bipolar-video-brief-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Youtube Bipolar Video &#8211; brief review."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3iyIRuq4r9Q\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Youtube Video Review:\u00a0&#8216;Cutiepieforeverc&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/strong>Highly\u00a0Recommended Resource.<br \/>\nMain topic: Bipolar.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Another brave testimony by a young US\u00a0<\/span>American<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0lady. \u00a0In 16 minutes, &#8216;Cutiepieforeverc&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">describes her experience of bipolar disorder. \u00a0Her first clear problems came when she went to college (away from home). \u00a0In common with many people who\u00a0<\/span>receive<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0a bipolar diagnosis, \u00a0her first symptoms were lack of sleep (something it appears that she had always faced to some extent). \u00a0This led to a period of 2-3 weeks where she hardly slept and indeed felt very little need to sleep*. \u00a0During this period she\u00a0<\/span>engaged<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0in a variety of &#8216;reckless&#8217;\u00a0<\/span>behaviour<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span>including<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0shopping sprees and late night runs (from which she was regularly picked up by the police). \u00a0It appears that she did not seek help at this point, this had to wait until the ensuing depression, which lasted around 6 months, led to her getting to &#8216;breaking point&#8217; and contacting her mother, leading to\u00a0<\/span>her<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0hospitalisation. \u00a0 \u00a0Although I don&#8217;t have research evidence to support this more generally, many of the young people I have worked with (or done research with) have experienced their first serious\u00a0<\/span>problems<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0at college\/university, and often in the first year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">&#8216;Cutiepie&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0details her\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">hospitalisation<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0as\u00a0&#8216;the most horrific experience of my entire life\u2019, \u00a0which is not an uncommon description, even from those who believed that they needed to go to hospital. \u00a0She worked out that in order to get out of hospital, she could lie and cover up her \u00a0depressive\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">symptoms (that hospital may have made worse), which worked. \u00a0Again many people will recognise this catch 22 situation, of being stuck in a hospital that does not seem to be working for them, and\u00a0<\/span>needing<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0to pretend that all is fine to leave the hospital. \u00a0 She then goes on to discuss her\u00a0journey to find a medication treatment that worked for her. \u00a0At the point the video was made, she describes feeling very settled and content with her life and medication. \u00a0She ends the video with<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0some advice for people going through similar experiences:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t ever settle for a medication that does not feel right and does not make you feel right.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t ever settle for a doctor that does not want the\u00a0absolute best for you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Excellent Advice!<\/strong> \u00a0In my opinion, health professions should absolutely encourage their clients\/patients to take control of their own treatment and encourage them to seek out (with guidance), what works best for them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall<\/strong>, this video was a very clear and concise description of one young person&#8217;s experience of bipolar disorder. \u00a0&#8216;Cutiepie&#8217;, describes experiences that many people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or similar will be able to relate to, and as such this video would make an excellent resource for therapy groups or interested individuals.<\/p>\n<p>*Sleep abnormalities are becoming one of the most convincing traits linked to bipolar disorder diagnoses, and emerging evidence suggests that early sleep problems may be a risk factor for the development of later mood disorder symptoms. \u00a0When I get time, I will try and provide some links to the latest research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Youtube Video Review:\u00a0&#8216;Cutiepieforeverc&#8217; Highly\u00a0Recommended Resource.
